Dear citizens of Israel,

In this lofty moment,

Where we are celebrating

70 years for the state of Israel

I have a memory engraved in me

That has to do with the verses

Of the Idependence Scroll

In the land of Israel was established

The Jewish people

After it was exiled

By force from it’s country

It kept it’s faith wherever it was scattered

32 years ago

On a rainy morning

I visited the Titus Arch in Rome

I stood under this ancient archway

By me were groups of tourists

From Japan, and from Scandinavia

The tour guide

Pointed with his wet umbrella

At this sculpture of the Roman soldiers

Who are carrying in their victory parade

The menorah of the Temple that was destroyed

This was the moment of self-reflection

I thought about the vicissitudes of our people's fate

But all the sudden

I saw the tourists were very moved

And they kept pointing at the menorah very enthusiastically

And some said very clearly: Israel, Israel

They were expressing what many others feel

When they visit the Arch of Titus

That this Menorah

That was engraved in stone

As a symbol of slavery, of destruction

This menorah was turned into a symbol

Of revival and rebirth

And it is here before our very eyes

And this, my friends,

Is something that has no match

in all other people’s history

Because all the ancient peoples

Who were exiled from their lands

Vanished

They were dispersed all over

They became part of other nations of the world

Only us,

The Jewish people

Who were a mere leaf

In the storm of exile

We refused to vanish

We refused to assimilate

We kept our faith to Zion

We dreamt of going back to Jerusalem

And in Zion we once again grew a strong stem

And flowering branches in our land

In Eretz Israel - The land of Israel

Judea was destroyed in the year 70 AD

In the year 70 AD the menora’s light was extinnguished

But today

The 70th year of Israeli Independence

The menorah is our nation's symbol

And it's light is stronger than ever!

As the prophet Isaiah said:

Arise, shine, for your light is come!

Citizens of Israel

Also today,

There are those who want to put out the menorah

To turn off the light penetrating from Zion

I promise you:

This won't happen!

This is not going to happen because our light

Will always be stronger than their darkness

When David Ben-Gurion declared

The establishment of the State

He didn't flinch from the proclamation

Even when he knew

That this was going to entail a difficult war

Against those who wanted to prevent our revival

And even today, we do not flinch from a struggle

Against those who seek to destroy us

Because we know that protecting ourselves

By ourselves, this is the essence of independence

We are adamant as ever

We are stronger than ever!

The secret of our power lies in our connections

In the justness of our cause

In our soldiers

The wonderful Maccabees of our day

In whom the love of country

Throbs in them

This is the fate of the battle that has been on their shoulders

If we need to protect ourselves

We will stand up to the challenge

And ensure the eternity of Israel!

Distinguished guests,

Not in parchment, or in ink

Was the Scroll of Independence written,

It was written in the blood of our sons and daughters

And in the heroism of the defenders of the nation

From 1948 and until today

To all the servicemen and servicewomen,

The IDF and all other security forces,

I salute you!

The whole Nation salutes you!

And the whole Nation loves you!

We are one people

Jews from all exiles

From Morroco and Russia

From Poland and Ethiopia

From France and Yemen

And by next to us our brothers

The Druze

The Christians

The Muslims

The Bedouins and Circassians

Who have tied their fate to ours

And contribute to our country in all fields

Dear citizens,

Even when there are disagreements

And how is it possible to do it otherwise

In our vibrant democracy

We will conduct them with mutual respect

United in knowing that we have only one home!

When my grandfather’s generation

Came over to Israel 100 years ago

They kissed the land of the homeland

And today

When we Israelis come back from abroad

And the wheels of the plane touch that very soil

We clap our hands

And I tell you:

There is nothing like that anywhere else in the world

It is so good that you have come home!

And when I meet you

And I meet many of you

I ask you:

How's our nation?

And here, my friend Avshalom Kor will forgive me

About the wondrous renewing of Hebrew

Because many of you answer me:

Mr Prime minister:

We have a huge, (immense) country

There is no match to our nation!

And it's so true!

There's no match to her!

And it doesn't surprise me

Because Hertzl

The generator of our resurrection prophesied:

Give us a peice of land to hold on to

And we'll do the rest on our own!

He was so right

A new spirit

Brought to life the dry bones

A spirit of independence

One floor after another

We are building our national home

We turned the wasteland into greenhouses

Stony areas to paved roads

Remote settlements

Into flourishing cities

70 years ago,

Immediately after the Declaration of Independence,

The masses went out to dance in the streets

And they cried:

Long live the state of Israel!

They say that one of them

Looked up to the heavens and sighed

Long live the state of Israel?

But God Almighty,

Out of what?

But today,

Today the answer is clearer than water:

It is the agriculture

The industry

The tourism

The gas

The technology

The innovation

The talent and the initiative that you have

The citizens of Israel

From your great talent and initiative

That burst out in all directions

Even more so in recent decades

That turned Israel

Into a nation with a free economy

You are the engine

You are the source

You are the power!

We all cherish

Our alliance with the United States

We all welcome

The historic decision by President Trump

To recognize Jerusalem as our capital!

And to move to it the embassy

Of the strongest superpower in the world!

Thank-you, Mr. President!

Thank-you, America!

Many many countries

On all continents

Admire our achievements

In substance and in spirit

In science and in culture

I visited India a few months ago

I want to tell you

In one city

A quarter of a million Indians

Came out into the streets

They waved Israeli flags in their hands

They cheered that State of Israel

I must tell you

I was moved to tears

I asked my host:

You are one and a quarter billion people

We’re a little less

Soon, God willing, we’re going to make 9 million

Please explain to me

This interest

That India discovered in Israel

The Indian Prime Minister said to me:

You are a superpower!

A world technological superpower!

With our technological power,

And security power,

We are creating a revolution in our foreign relations

And are now experiencing political prosperity

Unprecedented in our history

We are turning Israel

Into a rising world power

Citizens of Israel,

When, sent by you, I meet the leaders of the world,

I am so proud to represent you

To represent you and our nation

That is a lighthouse of power

Of liberty, of progress

And I want to say to you something else:

Deep appreciation

I would even use the words “deep admiration” for Israel

Deep admiration for Israel

Is finally sipping into a very important place

Into the Arab nations

And here, I believe

Lie the real seeds for peace!

Our hands are reaching out for peace

To all our neighbors who desire it

And to our enemies who think that we

are a mere passing phenomenon:

I have news for you:

In another 70 years you will find here a State

That is stronger sevenfold!

Because what we have done so far

This is just a beginning!

The light of Israel will shine forever!

לפני 32 שנים, בבוקר גשום, ביקרתי בשער טיטוס ברומא. עמדתי תחת הקשת העתיקה, לידי קבוצות תיירים מיפן ומסקנדינביה. מדריך התיירים הצביע במטרייה נוטפת מים על תבליט החיילים הרומים שנושאים בתהלוכת ניצחון את מנורת בית המקדש שחרב. זה היה רגע של התכנסות בתוך עצמי. הרהרתי בתהפוכות הגורל של עמנו, אבל פתאום שמתי לב שהתיירים מאוד מתרגשים. הם מצביעים על המנורה בהתלהבות, וכמה מהם אומרים בבירור: "ישראל, ישראל". הם ביטאו מה שמרגישים רבים שמבקרים בשער טיטוס, שמנורה זו, שנחקקה באבן כסמל לשעבוד וחורבן, המנורה הזאת הפכה לסמל של תחייה ותקומה. הנה היא כאן לפנינו.
 

וזהו ידידיי, זהו דבר שאין לו משל בתולדות העמים, כי כל העמים העתיקים שהוגלו מארצם – נעלמו. הם נפוצו לכל עבר, נטמעו באומות אחרות. רק אנחנו, העם היהודי, שהיינו כעלה נידף בסופת הגלות, אנחנו סירבנו להיעלם. אנחנו סירבנו להיטמע. אנחנו שמרנו אמונים לציון. חלמנו לחזור לירושלים, ובציון הצמחנו מחדש גזע חסון וענפים פורחים בארצנו, ארץ ישראל.
 

בשנת 70 לספירה חרבה יהודה, בשנת 70 לספירה כבתה המנורה. אבל היום, בשנת 70 לעצמאות ישראל, המנורה היא סמל מדינתנו, ואורותיה חזקים מתמיד. כדבר הנביא ישעיהו: "קומי, אורי, כי בא אורך". אזרחי ישראל, גם היום יש מי שרוצה לכבות את המנורה. לכבות את האור שבוקע מציון. אני מבטיח לכם: זה לא יקרה. זה לא יקרה משום שהאור שלנו תמיד יגבר על החושך שלהם.
 

כשדוד בן גוריון הכריז על הקמת המדינה, הוא לא נרתע מההכרזה, גם כשהוא ידע שהיא כרוכה במלחמה קשה מול אלה שרצו למנוע את תקומתנו. גם אנחנו היום איננו נרתעים ממאבק מול אלה שחותרים להכחידנו, כי אנחנו יודעים שלהגן על עצמנו בכוחות עצמנו זוהי תמצית העצמאות. אנחנו נחושים כתמיד, אנחנו חזקים מתמיד. סוד כוחנו טמון בלכידותנו, בצדקת דרכנו, בלוחמינו, המכבים המופלאים של ימינו, שאהבת המדינה מפעמת בהם וגורל המערכה נישא על כתפיהם. אם נידרש להגן על עצמנו, נעמוד באתגר ונבטיח את נצח ישראל.
 

מכובדיי וידידיי, לא על קלף ולא בדיו נכתבה מגילת העצמאות - היא נכתבה בדם בנינו ובנותינו, ובגבורתם של מגיני המדינה מתש"ח ועד היום. לכל המשרתים והמשרתות בצה"ל ובכוחות הביטחון, אני מצדיע לכם. כל העם מצדיע לכם, וכל העם אוהב אתכם. עם אחד אנחנו, יהודים מכל הגלויות, ממרוקו ורוסיה, מפולין ואתיופיה, מצרפת ותימן, ולידנו אחינו, הדרוזים, הנוצרים, המוסלמים, הבדואים והצ'רקסים, שקשרו גורלם לגורלנו, ותורמים למדינתנו בכל התחומים.
 

אזרחים יקרים, גם כשיש בינינו מחלוקות, ואיך אפשר אחרת בדמוקרטיה התוססת שלנו, ננהל אותן בכבוד הדדי, מאוחדים, בידיעה שיש לנו רק בית אחד. כשבני דורו של סבי הגיעו ארצה לפני 100 שנה, הם נישקו את אדמת המולדת, והיום, כשאנחנו הישראלים חוזרים מחו"ל, וגלגל המטוס נוגע באותה אדמה, אנחנו מוחאים כפיים, ואני אומר לכם: אין דבר כזה בשום מדינה אחרת בעולם – "כמה טוב שבאת הביתה!".
 

וכשאני פוגש אתכם, ואני פוגש רבים מכם, אני שואל אתכם: "איך המדינה שלנו?", וכאן יסלח לי ידידי אבשלום קור על פלאי העברית המתחדשת, כי רבים מכם עונים לי: "ראש הממשלה, יש לנו מדינה חבל על הזמן. אין על המדינה שלנו". וזה כל כך נכון – אין עליה. וזה לא מפתיע אותי, משום שהרצל, מחולל תחייתנו, התנבא: "תינתן לנו כברת ארץ להיאחז בה, והשאר נעשה בעצמנו". הוא כל כך צדק. רוח חדשה עוררה לחיים את העצמות היבשות, רוח הקוממיות. קומה אחר קומה, אנחנו בונים את ביתנו הלאומי. הפכנו שממות לחממות, טרשים לכבישים, מעברות נידחות לערים פורחות.
 

לפני 70 שנה, מיד אחרי הכרזת העצמאות, המונים יצאו לרקוד ברחובות וקראו: "תחי מדינת ישראל". מספרים שאחד מהם נשא עיניו לשמיים ונאנח: "תחי מדינת ישראל, אבל ריבונו של עולם – ממה?". אבל היום, היום התשובה ברורה - מהמים, מהחקלאות, מהתעשייה, מהתיירות, מהגז, מהטכנולוגיה, מהחדשנות, מהכישרון והיוזמה שלכם, אזרחי ישראל. מהכישרון והיוזמה העצומים שלכם, שפרצו לכל עבר, ביתר שאת בעשורים האחרונים, משהפכנו את מדינת ישראל למדינה עם כלכלה חופשית. אתם המנוע, אתם המקור, אתם הכוח.
 

כולנו מוקירים את הברית האיתנה עם ארה"ב, כולנו מברכים על ההחלטה ההיסטורית של הנשיא טראמפ להכיר בירושלים כבירתנו, ולהעביר אליה את השגרירות של המעצמה החזקה בעולם. תודה לך הנשיא, תודה לך אמריקה.
